What Happens to Your Skin in the Days After Laser Treatment

In the first 24 to 72 hours after a laser procedure, it is normal to experience redness, mild swelling, and a sensation similar to sunburn. Skin may feel tight or appear slightly darker before it begins to shed. These responses are part of the natural healing process and typically resolve within days to a couple of weeks, depending on the type of laser used and individual skin characteristics.

Healing timelines vary from person to person and depend on factors such as the depth of the treatment, your skin type, and how consistently you follow aftercare instructions. Your treating doctor will walk you through what to expect specifically for you at your consultation. Keep the skin clean and moisturised using only products recommended by your clinic. Avoid touching or picking at any peeling areas, as this can disrupt healing and increase the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation — a particular concern for skin of colour.

Why Bali’s Climate Requires Extra Precautions

Bali’s tropical environment — high UV index year-round, heat, and humidity — creates conditions that require more careful aftercare than cooler, temperate climates. Sun exposure is the most significant risk factor for complications after laser treatment, including hyperpigmentation and delayed healing.

Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every morning, and reapply every two hours if you are outdoors. Physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are generally well-tolerated on recently treated skin. Avoid direct sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and wide-brimmed hats offer additional protection. High humidity in Bali can also cause excessive sweating, which may irritate treated skin — keep the area as cool and dry as reasonably possible during the initial recovery period.

Products and Activities to Avoid

During the recovery phase, certain ingredients and activities can impair healing or cause adverse reactions. Avoid products containing retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, vitamin C in high concentrations, alcohol-based toners, and fragranced formulations until your doctor advises it is safe to reintroduce them.

Physical activities that raise body temperature significantly — vigorous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and hot baths — should be avoided for at least a week following most laser procedures, as heat can worsen swelling and prolong redness. Swimming in pools is also discouraged during initial healing due to chlorine exposure. If you plan to enjoy Ubud’s natural surroundings, shaded walks are generally more suitable than activities in direct sunlight during your recovery window.

When to Contact Your Clinic

Most side effects following laser treatment are mild and self-limiting. However, certain signs warrant prompt medical attention. Contact your clinic if you notice increasing pain or swelling after the first 48 hours, blistering that was not anticipated by your doctor, signs of infection such as warmth, pus, or fever, or significant darkening of the skin that appears to be worsening rather than improving.

Your follow-up appointment is an important part of the process. It allows your doctor to assess how the skin is healing and to make any adjustments to your ongoing skincare routine. Do not skip this step, even if your skin appears to be recovering well.
